Saronic Islands - Spetses
Want to walk around an entire Island in a day? If you
are looking for this kind of journey, then the small Saronic
Island of Spetses is just where you need to go. Small
enough to cover in a day but not to small that you will
be less than satisfied with your time investment, Spetses
Island is rich in history and covered in beautiful
beaches.
Perhaps the most amazing part of Spetses Island is that
it still holds many traditional values as being sacred.
As you walk through the city of Spetses, you will see
the famed local ship yards. While the manufacture of many
ships has become modernized, the people of Spetses still
work on ships in the ways of their ancestors, using wooden
keels. As you pass each mansion, you will see the personality
of the captain or admiral whose personality is reflected
in the unique architecture. Every neighborhood has a church
that looks like it came out of an artist’s sketchbook
that have stood since the Byzantine Empire.
For those of you who are fascinated
with history, Spetses is like a little bit of heaven.
Spetses Island is the home of the Museum of Spetses, which
is located at the mansion that Hadziyiannis Mexis, a leading
activist of the era, once lived. You can also tour the
museum that was home to Laskarina Bouboulina and tour
the monastery of St. Nicols. The people of Spetses were
once a large and proud part of the Grecian army and pride
themselves on remembering the day they joined the Greek
revolution.
If you want to visit Spetses, like most other Greek islands,
you should leave your car at home. While some auto traffic
is allowed on the island, no private cars are permitted.
Once on the island, there are a number of bikes, buggies,
buses, and sea taxis available for your use and enjoyment.
Spetses Island is home to many amazing beaches, but there
is a good chance you will get lost in the history of the
island and forget all about the beaches until the sun
is setting. And, watching a sunset from Spetses Island
is the perfect end to a perfect day.
