Sporades Islands - Skopelos
Skopelos Island is the biggest
island of the Sporades Island cluster. Besides being
the largest island in the cluster, Skopelos is the capital
of the Sporades Island cluster and historically important.
Skopelos has a rich history
of wealth, mostly due to the locally produced wine
that is sold around the world. Skopelos has a little bit
of everything, from wine tasting to amazing natural scenery
and enough modern conveniences to keep even the most industrialized
amongst the visitors happy.
The main town on Skopelos Island is considered to be
one of the most beautiful and amazing harbor villages
on all of the Greek Islands, and definitely in the Sporades
Island cluster. The houses in the village are built in
tiers and lined with mulberry and other types of trees.
If you are looking for something to do in the village,
head toward the waterfront, it is where most of the taverns
and cafes are located. While you sit drinking your drink
of choice, you can enjoy watch the waters come and go.
Enjoy a traditional Greek meal while on Skopelos and enjoy
feeling like you are miles away from everything.
Skopelos Island is home to many well-known
beaches which you are welcome to enjoy. If you are
looking for something a little more intimate, consider
hiring a private boat driven by a local person. With the
right direction, they can lead you to more isolated beaches
where, even though you are on the largest island in the
cluster, you can feel like you and your loved one are
completely alone and lost in the beauty of the world around
you. After you are done at the beaches, do not forget
to explore the inland parts of the island. Rent a mountain
bike and explore some of the less known paths that cross
the island. As you cross the island, you will find yourself
in the middle of many small little towns and villages
and find yourself lost in valleys filled with almond,
plum, walnut, chestnut and olive trees.
Don’t be surprised if, on your journey through
the heart of the island, you find yourself completely
alone, save the sounds of nature that surround you. In
fact, you are so alone that seeing another person may
feel almost like a mirage at first. When you come across
others greet them with a smile and enjoy the beauty of
Skopelos.
