Cyclades Islands - Serifos

Each island in the Cyclades Island cluster is unique and similar in many ways. Each island is home to loving and passionate people who will welcome you into their lives with open arms and refreshing food. Each island has beaches surrounded by endless water, and each island contains history that is unique. The magnificent Serifos Island is much the same. A place of beauty and of history, Serifos Island shares a common geography and land structure with its sister islands in the Cyclades Islands cluster. However, Serifos Island has something unique that it can claim as its own; a vertical capital.

Hora, the capital of Serifos Island, is built on a vertical rock. Looking in toward Hora from the surrounding area of Serifos Island, you see something that does not seem to make sense to the un-educated eye. Everywhere around the capital city, white houses seem to climb up toward the city, as if ants are climbing up the mountain looking for their leader. At the top is a large castle and a series of windmills that spin continually as the solemnly watch the port of Serifos Island below. The whole scene is breath-taking and beautiful and seems to be straight out of one of the many stories that the islanders tell to their children.

Once you dock at Serifos Island, one of your top priorities should be to see and explore the castle that is in the heart of Hora. Surrounding the castle, you will see tons of small churches that display the unique architectural styling of Serifos Island. The church of Agois Ioannis Theologos (St John) sits atop the ancient ruins of a temple built to honor the goddess Athina (Minerva). While the gods and goddesses of ancient Grecian culture still play an important role in the history of the islands, their Christian heritage and indoctrination are also obvious.

Located in the western part of the Cyclades island cluster, Serifos Island has miles and miles of sandy beaches that are perfect for families, couples, and individual travelers alike. With the unique spectacle that is Hora and the land that surrounds it, Serifos Island is truly a unique island in the midst of many in the Cyclades Island cluster. As beautiful as it is awe-inspiring, the vertical capital of Hora and Serifos Island provide a nice day-trip away from the rest of the world.
