Cyclades Islands - Naxos
Naxos was the childhood home
of Zeus, the father or all gods. It is also said that
his love of the island was expressed by him making it
a fertile island where vineyards yielded the best
grapes for the most complex and appealing wines.
Naxos Island also produces several
cheeses which are presented with traditional Greek
cuisine. Feta cheese is white goat cheese and is used
in salads and in entrees. Feta cheese and cucumber compliment
each other almost as well as lemons and Greek standards.
Seafood is plentiful, so you should sample the fresh catches;
whether they are baked with tomatoes or boiled and served
with lemon halves, you will enjoy the flavor. Lovely sunsets
are visible from sidewalk restaurants along the shores.
You will notice that the deep blue sky is rivaled only
by the blue waters. It is as if sky and sea are the same
and the only way that you can tell the difference is where
the amber, orange and yellow of the sunset is painted
on the horizon.
Naxos Island is the largest
island in the Cyclades. It has a strong agriculturally
influence, as well as archeological finds. The islands
of Greece are steeped in history and mythology. Naxos
Island located almost in the very center of the Cyclades
is surrounded by the deep hued Mediterranean Sea.
The white sandy beaches
offer comfortable respite from the heat of the day.
Churches and monasteries are popular attractions here
like on most other islands. The narrow streets lined with
stones are quaint and well traveled. You will wind your
way to churches that have icons and ornate wood carvings.
You should make time to visit the Naxos Archaeological
Museum which has wonderfully preserved urns. The pottery
urns are beautifully painted and preserved. You will find
case after case of beautiful handcrafted pottery dating
back thousands of years.
The Temple of Apollo sits on Naxos Island at Hora. It
is awesome and worth the trip to it. There is also an
old castle on the island and you should make time to visit
here, too. From the white sand on the shoreline, you will
be able to see the aqua and then deep dark waters off
shore in the bay at Hora. It is an incredible sight and
to view it as sunset from the Temple of Apollo is a sight
that you won't easily forget.
