Cyclades Islands - Mykonos

The Mykonos Island is the most well known island in the Cyclades. Greek mythology indicates that Hercules tossed giants into the sea and this is how Mykonos Island was formed. Mykonos Island is popular with tourists and is the home to over ten thousand residents, who are friendly and helpful.

Mykonos Island was a favorite haunt of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. She and Aristole Onassis frequented the island for holidays, which made it a popular destination for the jet-set and for actors from Hollywood.

The Aegean Maritime Museum is located in the town of Mykonos on Mykonos Island. It was opened in 1985 with the goal of preserving the history of seamanship in Greece. Exhibits from before the Minoan era include 12th century documents and maps as well as artifacts and tools of seafaring. There are about 5000 books in the museum's library, including rare books.

The ruins on Mykonos Island date back to 3000 B.C. Mykonos Island is also believed to be the birth place of Apollo, who according to Greek mythology was Zeus' son. The Avenue of the Lions is impressive and is a seventh century street. You will find some ruins and columns that are under going restoration.

Mykonos Island is one of the "party" islands of the Cyclades, but that shouldn't stop families from venturing here. The popularity of Mykonos Island have made it arguably the most expensive isle in the Cyclades, but its wealth of beauty and history make it appealing.
The climate here is desert like. Dry hot days in July and August are made sweeter by the breezes that come out of the north and are known as meletima. They along with the attractive and comfortable beaches that surround Mykonos Island make the heat bearable. The humidity is low, so it is more comfortable than some tropical vacation spots.

Cube shaped white homes, buildings and churches adorn the mountainous terrain. Here vineyards and olive trees are abundant. The sunrises and sunsets viewed from Mykonos Island are spectacular. Even if you only rise once during your stay on Mykonos, you will never regret seeing a sunrise on the Mediterranean Sea. The blue water and the orange, yellow and pink sunrise are the richest colors that you will ever see.

Whether you come to Mykonos Island for the nightlife, which is plentiful or the ruins which are well preserved and inspiring, you will enjoy your trip to this gem.
