Greek Islands and the Greece Islands Names

Cyclades Islands

Of the Cyclades islands, the Santorini Island is one of the most famous, and most frequently visited destinations in Greece. The island owes its existence and it’s crescent shape, from the eruption of the volcano. The mild activity of the volcano after this major eruption continues into the present (the most recent eruption occurred in the 1950’s), and has built two smaller islands within the caldera, called Palea and Nea Kameni.

Ionian Islands

The largest of the seven Ionian islands, Cephalonia is about 700 sq km, and is home to about 32,000 people.. The highest peak is the Ancient Mount Aenos, which reaches a towering 1628m (5341 feet). With Lefkas to the north and Zakynthos to the south, the island of Cephalonia is situated directly on the tourist trail, and continues to grow each year as more accommodation becomes available. Despite the increasing number of tourists, the island is so massive that it is still possible to get away to private, isolated places.

Dodecanese Islands

Greek holidays in the Dodecanese Islands provide a never to be forgotten experience- the beautiful landscapes, more of the endless sandy beaches that all of the Greek Islands offer, and breathtaking castles. Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, and the fourth largest of all Greek islands (after Crete, Euboea and Lesbos), is a favorite among sailors. The island is shaped somewhat like a diamond. Unlike many of the other islands in the Dodecanese, Rhodes is fertile not only in the valleys but also on the more mountainous terrain. You’ll find pine, orange, olive, lemon, fig and pear trees thriving through out the island of Rhodes. Rhodes is also called the “butterfly island”, because of the large number of butterflies which inhabit the island, due to the colorful hibiscus, jasmine and bougainvillea that the villages are lush with.

The Saronic Islands

Aegina Island, among the grouping of islands of the Saronic, is the closest island from Athens, the capital of Greece. Due to it's proximity to Athens, Aegina is often a weekend escape for the people of Athens. The island is located only one hour away by ferry. Aegina is world known for the quality of its pistachios and for the beauty of its' ceramics. Aegina Island has many archaelogical sites, quaint fishing villages, and of course- sandy beaches!

Crete Island

The climate of Crete is among the mildest in Europe. The strong northwesterly wind, the meltemi, makes even the hottest months of July and August comfortable. Rainfall is rare during the summer months. Autumn is Crete's mildest season, when temperatures are often higher than in spring. The mountains that run across the island act as a barrier to the weather, often creating different climate conditions in northern and southern Crete. Some of the most characteristic natural beauties of the Cretan scenery consist of the famous Cretan gorges that begin at the mountainous areas of the island and end to the sea. The green gorges contain rare species of flora and fauna that are protected by strict rules, as they are unique throughout Greece. Among them, one can admire rare species of cypress-trees, platans, pine-trees and wildflowers.

The Sporades Islands

Of the Sporades Islands, Alonissos is considered one of the most beautiful and authentic islands and is the ideal destination for those who are searching for peace and relaxation in their Greek holiday. The island is covered by dense vegetation, and people claim the waters surrounding Alonissos are the cleanest of all the Sporades Islands, with crystal emerald colored water.

The Eastern Aegean Islands

The Eastern Aegean Islands include the island of Ikaria, which is abundant with therapeutic, radioenergeized spring sources, known for their healing qualities. Along the coastline of Ikaria, there are many areas where the radioenergic hot mineral springs flow into the sea, where it is possible for people to swim or bathe. The readioenergic hot mineral springs contain saline radium and radonium, which have been diluted in the springs by nature. The healing effects of the water are primarily obtained through breathing in the vapors as they escape the top of the water, while some of the therapeutiv effects of the hot mineral baths are delivered through the skin when you bathe or swim in the water.
