The Cyclades Islands

The Cyclades Islands consist of 24 inhabited islands and 15 uninhabited islands. The Cyclades Islands are situated in the central and southern area of the Aegean Sea. Among the Cyclades islands, which include the islands of Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Folegandros, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini (also called Thera), Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros and Tinos.

 

The Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands is often called Heptanisos, which means "Seven Islands" in Greek because the Ionian islands consist of seven major islands. The islands are named: Corfu, Paxi, Lefkada, Ithaki, Cephalonia, Zakynthos,and Kythira, and are located along the western coast of Greece, near the Epirus and Peloponnes.

The Ionian Islands receive the most rainfall of all the Greek Islands, making these islands great for vegetation. These islands are also known for winds conducive to sailing. There are both very developed islands, with all the facilities you'd expect from a tourist attraction, and also more isolated islands among the Ionian Islands. The Dodecanese Islands

The Dodecanese Islands consists of twelve major islands; Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Patmos, Tilos, Symi, Leros, Astypalea, Nisyros, Kassos and Halki, and many smaller islands, located along the coast of Turkey, and furthest from the mainland. Their location has influenced the islands architectural styles, with many of the islands buildings influenced by the Eastern and Western cultures.

The Island of Crete

Crete is independent of the mainland of Greece, due to it's distance from the mainland, and the fertility of the land. Crete Island has a culture seperate from the rest of the Greek Islands because of it's isolation, and the people of Crete speak their own language and have their own traditions. Crete is the largest and most southernly located island of all the Greek Islands.

The Minoan civilization, the oldest and largest civilization in Europe, was originally established on the islands of Crete. Culture and history abound on this large island, and many ruins of the Minoan cvilization remain.

 

The Saronic Islands

 

The Saronic islands consist of five islands: Salamina, Egina, Poros, Hydra, and Spetses. The Saronic islands are located closest to Athens, making it a popular weekend attraction for the people of Athens.

A greek holiday among the Saronic islands has much to offer, and each island has unique characteristics; although all of the Saronic islands offer a natural beauty, clean beaches, and quaint villages along the coastlines. The waters around the Saronic islands are known for their great sailing.

 

The Sporades Islands

 

The Sporades islands consist of four inhabited islands, called Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros, and seven uninhabited islands. The Sporades islands are located east of the Pilion peninsula, with the four inhabited islands in the northern Sporades, closest to the mainland.

Beaches of the Sporades islands are known for their "turquoise" colored waters. If you're looking for a well developed tourist industry for your Greek holiday, the Skiathos and Skopelos are the most popular. For a more isolated island experience, Alonissos and Skyros can offer you their impressive, natural island beauty, dense vegetation and mountainous landscapes.

 

The Eastern Aegean Islands

 

The Eastern Aegean Islands consist of five major islands, including Chios, Ikaria, Lesvos, Limnos and Samos. The Eastern Aegean Islands also include many other small islands such as Fourni , Psara and Inousses, and Eftratios. The Greek island grouping is actually closer to Turkey than to the mainland of Greece.
