Cyclades Islands - Folegandros
The Mediterranean Sea is a prize of deep, rich indigo
and it offers brilliant contrast to the dry brush of the
Greek Isles. The bright
white architecture that is a signature of Greek Islands
is complimented by a California Mission style on small,
Folegandros Island. The almost 25 mile coastline that
surrounds the island with soft, white sand is its invitation
to enjoy real Greek villages that seem unaffected by the
march of time.
Folegandros Island seems to be lost in time. Here you
will find that leisure and relaxation are the norm. Although
you will find a few bars in the Village of Chora, this
is not an island known for its nightlife.
Folegandros is a very peaceful isle where you will relax
on soft white beaches; as on most Greek Islands, you will
want to carry food and beverages
with you for an excursion to the beach.
Folegandros Island is a typical Greek
Island that offers beautiful views from atop sheer
cliffs. There are caverns for exploration, but perhaps
the most attractive recreation on Folegandros Island is
snorkeling and fishing. There are several nudist beaches
on Folegandros Island, which is another indication of
the isles laid back and relaxed atmosphere.
The cuisine on Folegandros is very traditional Greek.
You will want to enjoy the traditional and very tasty
local bread that is baked in rock ovens. You will also
find cheese is made here. You will want to simple dishes
like moussaka, which is a baked eggplant dish, not unlike
Italian eggplant Parmesan; however this traditional Greek
dish isn't smothered in tomato sauce. The basic ingredients
for moussaka are eggplant, potatoes, ground beef, onions
and a lightly crusty topping. As most eggplant dishes,
it is good with fresh squeezed lemon on top.
To reach Filegandros, you will have to board
a ferry or hydrofoil from a larger island and the
trip is about two hours. Karavostassis is the harbor village
that you will arrive in. Here you will notice how small
and quaint Filegandros Island is. Karavostassis is very
small and untouched by the modern pressures.
Once you are on Filgandros Island, your main source of
transportation is by bus, though you can rent bicycles
and motorcycles. The climate in the Greek Islands is comfortable
year-round, with very, dry hot conditions in July and
August, so you will enjoy dips in the Mediterranean Sea
or any of a number of swimming pools that anchor hotel
accommodations.
