Cyclades Islands - Andros
The capital of Andros Island is Chora, which snuggles
into the mountain-side like most Greek cities, but there
are many attributes to Andros island that make it a must-see
stop on your list of destinations in Greece. From its
rich mythology to its
intriguing ruins, Andros Island is a wealth of beauty.
Apollo is the grandfather of Andros and Andros Island
is the namesake of the mythological boy. Throughout Greece,
you will be greeted by the stark bright white buildings
that surround beaches along its coasts, Andros Island
is no exception. The distinct buildings welcome all who
spy them from the air or sea.
Two museums are located in the city of Chora on Andros
Island: the Museum of Modern Art and the Archaeological
Museum. Andros Island is a mecca for art lovers. The Museum
of Modern Art opened its doors in 1979 and built an addition
in 1986 because it became a successful place for art exhibitions.
Artists including Chagall, Kadinsky and Picasso are a
small sample of what has been on display. The success
of the art exhibits brought about the need for more hotel
accommodations, too and that has been very good for
the economy on Andros Island as well as, though out Greece.
The Mediterranean Sea offers the clearest of blue waters
in the world and the waters embrace the wonderful white
sand beaches that grace Andros Island's shores. Whether
lying on the beach or taking a dip in the Mediterranean
Sea, you will enjoy arguably crystal clear bluer than
blue temperate waters.
Meletima winds come out of the north and provide respite
from the dry heat of the summer where average temperatures
are 89 degrees in July and August with humidity near 55
degrees. Winters are mild boasting average temperatures
between 53 and 67 degrees.
Andros Island is a must-see spot for travelers. It is
the only island in the Cyclades
that has abundant running water largely due to its plentiful
rivers. Fresh mineral springs that are said to have healing
powers keep the island's rich vegetation green year-round.
Andros Island is the green jewel of the Cyclades as well
as the second largest island in the Cyclades Islands.
It offers the best in hotel accommodations because of
its museums and comfort year round because of its running
water.
Andros Island with its modern conveniences still offers
you real village feel and appeal year-round.
