Ancient Greece - Gods, Democracy and mythology
The people of early Greece believed that their people
should be free, as long as the people’s actions
were within Greece law. Greece history will claim that
“individuality” was the basis for their society,
and that they would fight wars through out Greece history
to keep their individuality. A common philosophy was followed
by the people of early Greece, and has greatly affected
their civilization. The philosophy can be found on the
shrine of Delphi, and it reads two phrases we know and
use today, “Nothing in excess” and “Know
thyself”.
The city of Athens is one of
the world’s most famous cities, and is named after
one of the Greek gods, Athena, who’s known as the
goddess of wisdom. The Greek origin of Athens was that
the city was one of the first to be considered democratic
in 508 BC; the word itself is derived from the Greek words
“demos” which means people, and kratein, which
means to rule. The citizens of early Greece met in Athens
on a regular basis to discuss and make decisions. In fact,
throughout the Greek timeline, the country has provided
many contributions to our current civilization, including
Democracy, philosophy, arts and mathematics to name a
few. Students all over the world still study the thoughts
and philosophies of Greek historians like Aristotle, Plato
and Socrates.
Greece history also brought us the Olympic games, as
they were the Athenians greatest festival every four years,
and athletes from all over ancient Greece would compete
against one another to honor Zeus. As is customary today,
winners of the early Greece Olympics were given crowns-
although at that time they were made with olive wreaths
GREEK WARS
Greek origins include the well-known stories of Greek
mythology, many of which center around the Twelve Olympian
Gods, the more famous ones including Athena, Zeus, Aphrodite
and Poseidon. To this day, people all over the world refer
to some of the Greek gods and mythology creatures, like
Medusa, Cyclops and Pegasus.
Wars are very large part of Greek history. Below is a
Greek timeline that includes many of the wars fought in
ancient Greece:
Persian Wars, 499 BC to 479 BC
The Peloponnesian War 431 BC to 404 BC
The Trojan Wars
The Trojan Wars are the wars of the gods, and can be read
in any Greek mythology text. The Persian wars were fought
over politics. The Peloponnesian war was fought against
Sparta, and over 27 years long! Sparta won and had control
over Athens for about 30 years, until Macedonia took over.
Here is where the famous Alexander the Great takes over,
with plans to unify Greece and create a monarchy that
reached worldwide. He fell short of his plans, but he
is still known as one of the countries most charismatic
and heroic king of all time.
From the beginning of time, Greek life has been dominated
by religion, and it is evident in the beauty found in
Greek temples. There are three architectural systems that
originated during ancient Greek times and their artistry
continue to be an inspiration to many architects around
the world.
