Sporades Islands - Alonissos
All of the Greek Islands have
been shaped in some for or another by the subtle but lasting
invasion of the modern world. While Alonissos is not immune
to the changing culture off of the island, it is still
very much rooted in history and tradition and not quick
to change simply for the sake of change.
In contrast to some of the
Sporades Islands, Alonissos offers extreme seclusion.
If you want to and look hard enough, you can find your
own private beach and be the only person on it for hours.
Simple and beautiful, Alonissos is an island that is perfect
for nature lovers and people that are simply looking for
a way to get away from everything fast-paced and hectic
about the world and replace the noise of the city with
the silence and simple noises of the natural world.
In fact, as you travel through the secluded areas of
Alonissos, you will probably encounter several men and
women that are still wearing the traditional island clothing
of their ancestors. These people believe in the success
and power of their heritage, and still work with the same
skills and cook with the same methods of those that came
before them. To most of us in the industrialized world,
their methods may seem backwards and silly, but to the
people of Alonissos, it is simply the way of life.
The main town of Alonissos is Patitiri, which is really
nothing more than a harbour-side settlement, complete
with cafes and taverns that overlook the ports so the
villagers can watch each ship as it enters and leaves
the ports. Take time to get to know Patitiri and enjoy
the spectacular panorama that welcomes you. You will be
met by small cafes and friendly natives of the island
at every turn. They welcome visitors and they welcome
those that come to their island to experience everything
at every turn.
If it seems like the waters that surround the Isle of
Alonissos are especially clear, that is because they are.
The waters around the island have been set aside as a
National Marine Park, which is designed to protect endangered
species like the Mediterranean Monk seal. Because the
waters are protected, not must is allowed in the water
or on the island from the outside. Be prepared to experience
Alonissos on foot, and be prepared to enjoy every moment!
